Production Assistant
Description: We are looking for an energetic individual to join the production team at our factory where we specialize in creating printed materials, including: posters and postcards, booklets and pamphlets, softcover and trade editions, as well as custom and elaborate hardcover volumes. Our clients primarily consist of individuals and institutions in the creative industry, including photographers, designers, small publishers, galleries. In addition we make textbooks for universities, novels and nonfiction, and other text-based books.
Responsibilities: Due to the custom nature of the books we produce, daily tasks will vary. Responsibilities may include assembling book blocks for binding; hand collating book inserts; folding and tipping on endpapers; foil stamping book components; application of headbands; trimming books and packing boxes; and operating various book binding machinery.
Qualifications: Our ideal candidate is someone who has acute attention to detail, works well in both an individual and team setting, is motivated, focussed, and completes tasks in a timely manner. Bookbinding and warehouse experience is a plus, but not necessary. Working knowledge of both PC and Mac, the ability to learn quickly and understand basic print and bookbinding techniques used in the manufacturing process, and experience using basic power tools is desirable.
The factory is based in Clifton New Jersey and not easily accessible via public transit. We highly recommend that applicants have a car and live in New Jersey. In addition, applicants must be comfortable standing for an entire shift, be able to lift boxes up to 60lbs, and feel comfortable operating large-scale machinery.
Benefits Include: Paid Time Off (a minimum of 8 paid holidays and approx. 8 vacation days annually).
Benefits Do Not Include: Health Insurance.
Perks: We encourage our team to use the resources of the printing and binding facility to produce their own work and foster their personal practice.
New!!! As part of the work day, Friday afternoons include an hour-long publisher or artist talk to learn about different techniques, design strategies and creative practices. Through these informal talks, we hope to encourage dialogue, build community, and share our collective enthusiasm about books.
